Rookie of the Year

Tori Deal

This might be the easiest decision made so far. Some people are super pro-Tori, some don’t get her. Some even think her Dirty XXX debut wasn’t anything special, though I beg to differ. Also, D:30 lent us very few rookies that made a big splash to focus on.

Let us start with the fact Tori came into this house not only a rookie (and therefore an easy target), but also with her man at the time, Derrick H. Coming to the house with a “ride or die” might be the biggest red flag for any young player in this game, especially for a new face. Tori also entered this season with the misfortune of having those four dreaded letters succeed her name: AYTO.

Say what you will, but the Real World/Road Rules/Challenge worlds haven’t been especially accepting of the Are You the One kids. In fact, being affiliated with that show may as well be a big, red X on your back. Our group of Challenge vets made it very clear from jump that there were two separate entities, and the new cast were not safe.

It’s been a few seasons since bringing in some of the early transplants; Devin, Hunter, Nelson, Amanda, etc. and we are set to see plenty more - but the addition of Big Brother, Geordie Shore and whatever other cast mates MTV wants to bring in has since leveled that playing field; but it wasn’t always this way, and Miss Tori Deal wasn’t exactly given the free pass either.

Headed to gameplay, the vet males made very quick work of Tori’s man, Derrick H. It was a clear message to AYTO that they were on the block, and an even clearer message to Tori that couples would not be tolerated.

Losing Derrick would end up being the best possible outcome for Tori, as she was able to drop the ‘us’ and focus on the ‘me.’

Tori went on to be a winner on the first three challenges (including the first purge), as well as one of four winners (alongside CT, Jordan and Cara Maria) of the second purge. She quickly started to fit in and look as though she belonged with the big dogs, later even being singled out and reprimanded by Camila for a Presidio blindside.

Tori came to the house incredibly affable and with great charisma, showing her comedic side with rap battles and impressions, while continuing to play hard and advance. She personified the Rookie of the Year title by coming in as a target for myriad reasons, yet still fought to make a final, coming in third behind Challenge legends Camila and Cara Maria.
